Boon Docking in the Anza-Borrego Desert

One Go Power 170 watt solar panel and two batteries is all you need to stay off grid in the Anza-Borrego Desert. Of course it helps when it is spring time and the desert has received a lot of winter rain like this year. Check out my Boon Docking Kit on my website for more information.

Best Solution for Adding Solar Power to your RV

One of the simplest and most cost effective ways to add solar power to your RV motorhome is with a PORTABLE solar panel kit. These folding panels come with a carrying case and can be placed in the sun while your rig is parked in the shade. Two sizes, an 80 watt and a 120 watt Portable solar panel kit, are available. It is easy to connect the battery leads to your existing coach batteries and the included quick connect makes it very fast to add solar power when the sun is out.

Complete Solar System for Fulltime RV Living

I recently traveled to Julian, California to install a complete solar system on a 38' Montana 5th wheel RV trailer.  The system includes 3 Overlander-170 watt solar panels, four new East Penn Deka batteries, and a GP-IC-3000 Inverter / Charger.  The 3000 watt inverter is wired in pass through mode so every time the shore power or generator is used the GP-IC-3000 Inverter / Charger will quick charge the batteries with the built-in 125 amp battery charger.  With four batteries, every appliance in the RV can be operated except for the air conditioner.  The generator or shore power is required to operate the air conditioner.  The customers are leaving soon for a 18 month road trip.

Complete Solar Power System - Artic Fox 5th Wheel

Ready for full time RV living?  Adding a GP-IC-2000 Inverter / Charger to your RV will allow you to operate your RV appliances and will quick charge your batteries when the generator is installed.  This system has dual cable runs from the roof so that a total of 6 Overlander-170 solar panels can be installed.  Four AGM batteries were installed to provide the battery power to the inverter.  Sun Power RV provides installation for the San Diego area and is an authorized dealer of Go Power mobile solar power systems.

Boondocking Bighorn Style - Receive a 30% Tax Credit

This last week was spent installing a 960 watt complete solar system on a Bighorn 5th wheel trailer at the Surf & Turf RV park next to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The owners recently retired and are starting a lifestyle of full-time RV living. Their next stop is a campground in Carlsbad that does not have electrical hookups. Four more batteries were added to this 5th wheel for a total of 6 batteries and 6 solar panels. The 3000 watt pure sine wave inverter will convert the battery power to 110 volt household power so all the appliances and receptacles will have power while off-grid. The owners will have to switch the fridge to propane gas while boondocking and will use a portable Honda generator to provide back-up power for those cloudy days or very hot days when the air conditioner must be operated.

Starting this year and continuing until the end of 2016 (unless extended) a 30% tax credit can be taken for installing solar on your second home or RV trailer. Now is the time to install solar on your RV.

Overlander 160 watt battery charging kit installed on a Roadtrek Sportsmobile in Pacific Beach.

The Overlander 160 watt solar battery charger is a great way to keep your batteries fully charged. This 160 watt panel comes with a PWM digital charge controller that insures your batteries are properly charged. It also includes a built-in USB port for charging your mobile devices.

Solar and Surfing Really Do Go Together!

Today I installed two 160 watt solar panels and a PWM charge controller on a 2014 Thor Miramar 34.2 Class A motorhome. The best part of this job was the excellent surf rolling in. The San Elijo State Beach Campground is near Cardiff by the Sea and many of the spots are on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can run your generator but only during the day. There is no power at these sites so having a solar system to keep the batteries charged is the only way to go.

Southern Cross 39' Sailboat Solar Project

Today I started working on troubleshooting the solar system on a Southern Cross 39' Sailboat. The boat is docked at a slip on Harbor Island in San Diego Bay. The owner is getting his boat ready for full-time living and requires a solar charging system that will keep his batteries charged while at sea and anchored. Having a boat slip with electricity is not always going to be an option.

Visit Sun Power RV for solar charging options for your sailboat.

Overlander - 160 Watt Panel Installation

Today I went to Carlsbad, CA to install an Overlander Solar Power Kit. The kit includes a 160 watt solar panel, GP-PWM-30 digital Solar Controller, cabling and mounting hardware. The 160 watt solar panel produces 9.14 amps and the digital charge controller monitors the system to prevent over charging the batteries. This kit is available at Sun Power RV. This RV has two new deep-cycle RV/Marine batteries. With just one 160 watt panel and the two batteries, the owner does not have to worry about power unless he wants to run the AC unit (he has an onboard generator for that.) Happy camping!
